Sally Quinn: What will God whisper in Herman Cain’s ear next?

Herman Cain said that God told him to run for president.

“That’s when I prayed and prayed and prayed. I’m a man of faith. I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I’ve ever done before in my life,” the Baptist preacher said. “And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses. You’ve got the wrong man Lord. Are you sure?”

Now Herman Cain has suspended his campaign. Did God tell him to do that?

Why on earth would God tell Herman Cain to run, put him through all of this, then have him get out of the race?

If God told Herman Cain to run, why did he also tell Anita Perry her husband should run (she saw the burning bush) and Michele Bachmann and all of the others who have been tapped on the shoulder? Is this some sort of cruel game God is playing?

So Herman Cain was just doing what God told him to do and women start accusing him of sexual harassment. Then comes Ginger White claiming to have had a 13 year affair with him.

Herman Cain couldn’t contain the stories fast enough. As fast as he could deny one, another story would surface. They were all lying, he claimed, and his wife defended him.

Gloria Cain, told Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren before the Ginger White story broke, that the man accused of sexual harassment, “Isn’t Herman. I know the person that he is. And I know the person they were talking about, I don’t know who that person is.” But she was very clear about the fact that she wouldn’t have put up with anything. “I know the type of woman you’re thinking about: that the little woman at home is the last to know. But I never see myself as being the little woman at home. And I’ve always said, when I’ve seen stories like that, I will not be one of those people who will stand up on stage with a smile and knowing that you were wrong. I’m not going to do that. So you know not to do anything wrong because you will be there by yourself.”

Poor Gloria Cain. What did she do to deserve this?

Clearly Herman Cain’s family was hurting. He even admitted, in an interview in New Hampshire, “If I ever reached a point where this campaign became damaging to my family … I’m not a quitter, but there is a point beyond which you will not go.” (This after saying, with tears in his eyes, that his wife’s role during his inauguration would be “holding the Bible when I am sworn in.”)

Yet he waited nearly a week before going back to Georgia to confront his wife about the Ginger White antics.

This after Gloria had said to Van Sustern, “when those people threw mud on Herman, they didn’t think about the fact that you’re throwing mud on the wife or the spouse, you’re throwing mud on the children. And we all have to endure what you’re doing.”

Gloria Cain talked about how she had lived her whole life “trying to be respectful, trying to be faithful, trying to have faith.”

Did Herman Cain think of that before he ran? Did he think of his wife and the potential mud that would be thrown at her and their family because of his actions after God told him to run?

He finally met with his wife Friday to reassess his campaign. He had already told her on the phone that none of the stories were true. “I told her exactly what has happened and what the situation is,” he said. My wife loves me. She just told me that again today. She just wants to know the truth, which I have given her the truth.”

I can’t help but wonder when they met on Friday if she held the Bible and made him swear on it.

After talking to his family, he decided, “with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign.”

He did this, he said, because of “the continued hurt caused on me and my family.”

And there, on Saturday was Gloria Cain, standing up on the stage with a smile waving to the crowd as though she had just been crowned homecoming queen. Her husband, in dark glasses, smiling and waving as though he were accepting the nomination.

I am at peace with my God. I am at peace with my wife and she is at peace with me,” he said.

Running for president was not the first time Herman Cain had been called by God. He was once, as he says, “called to preach the word of God and minister to the least, the last and the lost, and minister to his people.”

What’s next for Herman Cain? Will he write another book, do another radio show or give more speeches? Many were eagerly awaiting his endorsement just one day after his withdrawal. After all, there are a number of Republicans out there still in the running who are competing for God’s favor.

What will God whisper in Herman Cain’s ear next?
